De Netflix-revolutie begint pas

Er zijn geluiden over het succes van Netflix, zoals: het zou goed zijn voor 5-10% van het internetverkeer op het netwerk van UPC NL en de penetratie stond in november al rond de 6%. En dat terwijl het pas een paar maanden actief is in Nederland (sinds 11 sep 2013). Ook in andere opzichten gaat het goed met Netflix in Nederland:

  • NL staat bovenaan in de ISP Speed Index van Netflix zelf.
  • De portfolio groeit snel, mede door content deals voor Nederland (NBCUniversal, Lionsgate) en de hele footprint (Disney/Marvel). En met nieuwe original content (vervolgen op bestaande series, Marco Polo). Bij de start bestond de portfolio uit 826 items, per 15 jan. zijn het er 1.417).
  • Sneller dan misschien vermoed denkt Netflix over verdere uitbreiding in Europa (België, Frankrijk, Duitsland).
Wat kunnen we hier uit concluderen?
  • Netflix breekt de (S)VOD-markt open. Er is blijkbaar een grote vraag naar.
  • Lineaire TV verliest waarschijnlijk terrein, al blijkt dat nog niet direct uit de cijfers van SKO. In november 2013 was de gemiddelde kijktijd 208 minuten, tegen 2009 een jaar eerder.
  • Bestaande (Nederlandse) partijen hebben een grote kans gemist.
  • Het prijspunt (8 EUR/mnd) is blijkbaar goed gekozen.
  • Netflix heeft een duidelijke focus: niet de nieuwste films (dus goedkoop), geen live TV, geen sport.
En wat kunnen we verder verwachten?
  • Concurrentie van Videoland (RTL, met distributiepartners), Pathé Thuis (geen SVOD), chello (Film1) en natuurlijk operator-VOD en catch-up services van de omroepen (NLziet). Ximon stopt,  maar nieuwe kandidaten is mogelijk Lovefilm (Amazon). Waar gaan de marktverhoudingen naartoe?
  • Gaan partijen zonder eigen VOD (CanalDigitaal, de kleine kabelbedrijven) samenwerken met Netflix?
  • Komt het CDN van Netflix (Open Connect) naar Nederlandse ISP's?
